Some Jewish Women (Classic Reprint)
Excerpt from Some Jewish Women
Seven Martyrs, and both of these belong to legend rather than to history.
In the succeeding period - the Graeco Roman - the conditions are more favorable. Salome Alexandra, Mariamne, and Berenice are characters whose good and bad quali ties alike might justly engage the pen of a Plutarch. I have not, of course, presumed to undertake so difficult a task. Although I have not shirked critical inves tigation and careful research, I shall be amply content with the assurance of having gathered available material for a future his tory of women.
I may say, in conclusion, that it is my intention, at some future day, to add to this collection the portraits of the women of the time of the Gaonim and of the Middle Ages.
