Dick Tracy Illustrations by Rick Fletcher 1977-1978: A Catalog of Rick Fletcher Illustrations 1977-1978
“Slice of Life” can describe this wonderful collection of DICK TRACY illustrations by Rick Fletcher. In 1961, overlapping with his work on The Old Glory Story, an opportunity arose from the creator of "Dick Tracy". Chester Gould offered Fletcher a position on his team as an illustrator, he couldn’t refuse. In 1964 Fletcher would introduce to Gould his futuristic 2-way wrist TV which was worn by Tracy for decades. Sixteen years later on December 26, 1977, Chester Gould retired. Fletcher took over full art production of "Dick Tracy" and equipped Tracy with a Colt Trooper MKIII .357 magnum. Armed with manuscripts from multi-talented writer Max Allan Collins (who received an Inkpot Award during their partnership in 1982) Fletcher masterfully drew pages of Dick Tracy as seen in the weapons, technologies and noir style of Chester Gould. This series of five catalogs chronicle his personal best from December 26, 1977, until the last Sunday page on June 5, 1983. Many people still mistake Fletchers illustrations with artwork produced by Chester Gould. Fletcher illustrated Dick Tracy until his death from cancer on March 16, 1983.
