CLOUDS
CLOUDS begins in the Western Australia laboratories of GenoBotics, a high-tech start-up company founded by researchers Jonathan and Bronwyn Statler. GenoBotics produces nanobots – medical devices as small as molecules that allow doctors to diagnose, treat and cure a patient’s maladies within a patient’s body atom by atom.
California-based Global News Network assigns award-winning journalist Philippa Hutchings to produce a TV documentary exploring the company and technology, but before Pippa can start her work, she learns of Jonathan Statler’s untimely heart attack in his Australian lab.
Statler is resuscitated and rushed to a large Perth-Metro hospital, where he undergoes a cardiac angioplasty and stent placement. Jono recuperates with his wife by his side, quietly reflecting on the ‘lifequake’ event giving them a chance to reassess their lives. Their peaceful meditation is tragically disrupted when Victor Dyson, another patient, suddenly dashes down the corridor and leaps from the fifth-story veranda onto the car park below.
Police officers Walt Benson and Georgie Walsh investigate the circumstances of Dyson’s self-destructive act to determine whether it was an explainable death. Was evil intent involved? Were psychoactive drugs a factor? Was it merely by chance that a famous scientist lay in bed only a few doors away? Coincidence? Could a malevolent perpetrator mistakenly have targeted the wrong man? An unexpected twist causes Sergeant Walsh and journalist Hutchins to meet and quickly realise they are both searching for the answer to the same question – was Victor Dyson’s death a suicide, an accident or a murder?
Dan Churach’s latest technothriller, CLOUDS, maintains an intense level of suspense right up to the very last page.
