Mehdi Belhaj Kacem et Tristan Garcia ont en commun d'être deux figures majeures de la scène philosophique française et de poursuivre, chacun à leur manière, l'écriture d'une œuvre littéraire. « Algèbre de la Tragédie », le dernier chapitre de L'Esprit du nihilisme, est le point de départ choisi par Tristan Garcia pour son intervention lors du colloque organisé, en 2013, autour de l'œuvre de Mehdi Belhaj Kacem, à l'ENS-Ulm. Dans sa postface, Critique et rémission, il propose la lecture suivante de sa démarche : « L'œuvre de Mehdi Belhaj Kacem correspond à l'idéal que je me fais d'une pensée critique, au terme du XXe siècle et d'une modernité qui ne veut pas finir. Peter Szondis pathbreaking work is a succinct and elegant argument for distinguishing between a philosophy of the tragic and the poetics of tragedy espoused by Aristotle. The first of the books two parts consists of a series of commentaries on philosophical and aesthetic texts from twelve thinkers and poets between 1795 and 1915: Schelling, Hölderlin, Hegel, Solger, Goethe, Schopenhauer, Vischer, Kierkegaard, Hebbel, Nietzsche, Simmel, and Scheler. The various definitions of tragedy are read not so much in terms of their specific philosophies, but rather in the way their views assist in analyzing tragedies with an aim to establish a general concept of the tragic.The second part presents exemplary analyses of eight tragedies: Sophocles'Oedipus Rex, Calderons Life Is a Dream, Shakespeares Othello, Gryphius Leo Armenius, Racines Phaedra, Schillers Demetrius, Kleist's The Schroffenstein Family and Büchner's Danton's Death. The readings neither presuppose a concept of the tragic determined by context (as in Hegel's idea of the conflict between two orders of right), nor do they focus exclusively on the texts explicit contents. Instead, they elaborate the dialectical or aporetic structures at the heart of the tragic. The works analyzed represent the four great epochs of tragic poetry: the age of Greek tragedy; the Baroque era in Spain, England, and Germany; French Classicism; and the age of Goethe.

Homer and the Dual Model of the Tragic interprets both of Homer's epics as demonstrating a sense of "the Tragic." While this view of human experience and society is customarily linked with Greek tragedy rather than epic, Rinon uses close readings of the texts to argue persuasively that both The Iliad and The Odyssey present a view of pathos interwoven with the knowledge that it is unavoidable and inexplicable.Using Aristotle's Poetics as a guide toward defining eutuchia and dystuchia, Rinon analyzes specific sections of the epics. He touches on the Cyclops episode and its use of Bakhtinian "heteroglossia," on the use of Hephaestus' creativity in both epics in the emergence of tragic signification, and on Demodocus' songs in book 8 of The Odyssey as seen through André Gide's mise en abîme. For centuries, the author argues, Christian theology has preached the Cross and denied the tragic reality of the human condition. At the same time the secular world has denied the Cross and absorbed endless acts of violence and disaster. This book is not concerned with the horrors of war and reality of conflict, but with their constant pressure upon Western culture. Starting with the Biblical tradition and recalling the triumphs of the Athenian stage, the author traces the vitality of both through the development of the theatre and of European literature. This survey ends in the 20th century and draws conclusions which are critical of cheap religiosity. It proposes an acceptable synthesis of Christian existence and tragic involvement.
