Volume 18 of the Australian Dictionary of Biography is the second of two volumes to deal with Australians who died between 1981 and 1990. It includes articles by 560 authors on 670 individuals with surnames from L to Z, recording the lives of Australians whom many of us remember from the recent past. There are explorers, farmers, stockmen, trade union officials, business people, educators, criminals, judges, political activists, librarians, ballet dancers, cameleers, musicians and opera directors, speedway riders, polymaths, philanthropists and professional wrestlers and boxers. The volume includes academics Julius Stone and William Stanner; physicists Leslie Martin, Harry Massey and Ernest Titterton; military leaders Frederick Scherger, John Wilton, John McCauley, the first aboriginal commissioned officer Reg Saunders and war historian Alan Moorehead; feminist Ruby Rich and country women's leader Bertha Smith; surgeon Harry Windsor; Director-General of Education Harold Wyndham; ABC General Manager Charles Moses and a raft of diplomats-John Ryan, Dudley McCarthy, James Plimsoll, Laurence McIntyre, Annabelle Rankin, Alfred Stirling, Mick Shann, Marjorie Smart, Percy Spender and Alan Watt, some of whom became state governors; politicians William McMahon, Billy Sneddon, Enid Lyons, Dorothy Tangney, Lionel Murphy, Thomas Playford, as well as political journalist Alan Reid; Governor General William McKell; artists Fred Williams and Cliff Pugh; patrons of the arts John and Sunday Reed and authors Alan Marshall, Stephen Murray-Smith, Christina Stead, Kylie Tennant and Patrick White.Maintaining the ADB's tradition of scholarship, volume 18 presents a colourful mosaic of twentieth-century Australia. This host of lives gives a picture of our society, provides insights into the experiences of our people, and illuminates large themes in our recent history-immigration, urbanisation and suburbanisation, war (World War II, Korea, Malaya and Vietnam), material progress, increasing cultural maturity, conservative and progressive politics, conflict and harmony, and a new phase in transnationalism. It also reveals something of the greatness and smallness of which human beings are capable.

This Supplement 1580-1980 is an adjunct to the first sixteen volumes of the Australian Dictionary of Biography, and includes people who played a part in Australia's history from the beginning of European contact with the continent, ranging in time from the Dutch navigator Dirk Hartog, born in 1580, to the soldier John McKeddie, who died in 1980.More than five hundred life stories unfold here, subjects including the familiar, such as the castaway Eliza Fraser and the apple-grower Maria (Granny) Smith; the notorious, such as the New Guardsman Francis De Groot and the bushranger Dan Morgan; and the unfamiliar-the surgeon Tharp Mountain Girdlestone. Their names are sometimes little known, but all individuals made a significant contribution to Australia, such as Pat Sullivan, creator of Felix the Cat, and Charles Packham, creator of the pear that bears his name. Teresa and her brother Reginald Cahill may not be household names, but their Cahills' restaurants were as familiar as the harbour bridge for several generations of Sydneysiders. These life histories may be consulted with pleasure. All entries are based on primary research, much of it entirely new. This lively and often intriguing collection allows us to appreciate the ever-extending scope of individual aspiration and achievement in Australia's history. The volume also includes a useful and complete name index to all sixteen volumes of the Australian Dictionary of Biography and this Supplement.

Gary Thomas Scott became a member of KA while a student at Southwestern University. During the tumultuous 1960s, his interest in the fraternity's origins and its impact on Southern society led him to choose the early history of KA as his thesis topic for his master's degree in Southern History from the University of North Carolina. "This work is primarily an attempt at answering several simple questions: How and why did Kappa Alpha Order, one of several college fraternities established in the South after the Civil War, come to see itself as an organization devoted to the preservation of certain Southern "ideals and principles," i.e. myths or folk attitudes? What were these myths or attitudes which the fraternity sought to preserve? How did KA aid in the portage of these attitudes from one generation to another? And how, in turn, did these selected attitudes work to shape the organization?" The author hopes "that this attempt to decipher 'the mind of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity' will shed some light on the 'mind of the New South.'" An authority on the Kappa Alpha ritual, he has served on ritual revision committees and has interpreted the Order's history to KAs for more than two decades.

Carmen Montemayor Montemayor leaves Mexico at the age of fourteen during the Mexican Revolution in order to avoid being forced to join the federales. He has seen too much pain, sinful slaughter, and suffering and knows that to have a better life and to help his family, he must travel alone to the United States. During this journey, he encounters horrendous storms, beautiful ladies, swollen rivers, a true friendship and camaraderie, and respect from others. Through everything, he never forgets where he is from and who he is from. Nor where he is headed, and keeping padre Dios as his guide and conscience he sets about building his American life and attaining the serenity he seeks. On arriving in the United States, Carmen (Carlos, as he has become known for some unknown reason) finishes his education while staying with his Tia Maria in Pleasanton, Texas. He becomes well-known for his hard work and industriousness. Before too long, he will have his own business and his own family with his beloved Dominga Rodriguez Montemayor. He tells us briefly of his children and their spouses, but his life still centers around God and his beloved Dominga even after she has been gone for many years.
