A Black Man's Existence as a White Jew Book Description:In this memoir, A Black Man's Existence as a White Jew, award-winning author, genealogist, and historian Eric B. Willis uncovers a mysterious part of his family's history relating to the ongoing racial discriminatory practices against Black Americans and the perceived advantages and challenges of racial passing. In 2003, Willis began a genealogical exploration which would forever impact the lives and lineages of two American families--his black family and his maternal cousin's white family. Are you or someone you know living with "the dark secret in white face?" Black American men and women throughout history have chosen to live as white citizens. Through one of the most unforgettable and unexpected genealogical research expeditions, Willis discovers that one noted pianist and branch of his family tree who disappeared over 60 years ago indeed lived that life. This revelation leads to an unforgettable meeting with his cousin's white family members as they confront the truth about their dad's racial identity.Willis' book is a researcher's paradise as he includes excerpts from oral interviews, official records, government documents, voter records, news clippings, nightclub and performance ads, and photographs to both enhance and enliven the narrative. His narrative is not only magnificently creative and comprehensive, but it includes other historical events that relate only to his family yet are of great significance. The author and other noted black historians further address useful and practical solutions for overcoming today's historical and relational divisions between black and white Americans."If you do not expect the unexpected, you will not find it; for it is hard to be sought out, and difficult." --Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher

Rooted in a long and diverse genealogy, biographical approaches have developed from a focus upon a single story, a ‘life story’ and personal documents (e.g. diaries), to encompass (more routinely) autobiographical secondary and archival research and analysis - as well as multi-media, arts based creative multi-sensory methods. Biographical Research and practices as part of human understanding helps people to make sense of what has been and what is happening in their lives, cultures, communities and societies.Advances in Biographical Methods: Creative Applications takes up these themes: theorising, doing and applying current advances in biographical methods. It demonstrates the momentum with which they areas are developing as a field of scholarship, especially in relation to creative innovations and applications, such as in new forms of interview and other practices, and debates on its interlinking with art, performance and digital methods.

Black Power, Black Lawyer is a memoir that stitches suspense, calamity, humor and wit into a tapestry of history, politics, law, culture and romance. Both serious and scandalous, Nkechi Taifa's audacious quest for justice is a gripping commentary on life; the perennial nature of human resistance against oppression; and her earnest embrace of what is fair and correct. Sometimes raw, sometimes abrasive, sometimes passionate, Taifa offers her truth, unapologetically and unfiltered, with honesty and authenticity. Her memoir is the story of a quest rarely told. The search for the resisters and the rebellious; the pursuit of issues on the cutting edge. Although there are memoirs that chronicle iconic leaders striving for justice during the civil rights era, there is scant reminiscence of the transformative journeys for self-realization of ordinary people growing up during the tumultuous Black Power era. Black Power, Black Lawyer offers a uniquely personal glimpse from an insider's perspective into little known or understood parts of this country's history - from juicy stories of the more controversial and militant aspects of the Black liberation struggle, to the craziness of congressional "sausage-making" and the pivotal role of "strange bedfellows." Navigate this audacious quest with Taifa as she bears witness to ancestors, people and episodes that swayed the shaping of her identity and consciousness. No matter which vantage point she found herself - from sitting on the lap of that fine brother pulling security in the front office of the Black Panther Party; to getting arrested right after graduating from law school; to being accused of being an FBI agent; to representing the lead defendant in the Capitol Bombing case; to being detained at an airport five months pregnant as an alleged enemy of the state; to winning a six-figure settlement for clients in a pivotal employment discrimination suit against a major news media network; or to being a catalyst which sparked the change to the infamous crack cocaine laws -- her quest for justice in society reigned supreme. Taifa's memoir is sure to awaken, inform, provoke, move and, at its best, fire you up to either join, or continue, "The Struggle!"

Chinaman Tycoon tells the true story of Lew Hing, a poor Chinese who immigrated to America in the early 1870s. Defying overwhelming odds, he achieved fame and fortune by venturing into the white man’s business world at a time of intense, pervasive anti-Chinese sentiments. Starting with a fruit cannery in 1904 that employed as many as a thousand workers of all ethnicities, he diversified into banking and shipping and invested in commercial and agricultural enterprises that helped develop Mexicali, Mexico, into the metropolis it is today. Considered by many the wealthiest Chinaman in America in 1907, Lew Hing died nearly broke, a victim of circumstances and ill-advised decisions. Besides detailing the remarkable life of Lew Hing, this book also touches on the socio-economic conditions of San Francisco Chinatown in the late nineteenth century, the struggles experienced by minority entrepreneurs, Chinese immigration to Mexico, and the inner workings of the Chinese lottery business.Reviews:Was Lew Hing unusual? Actually, he represents many of the successful Chinese community leaders of his time, but their stories have not been told. Roland Hui has done an excellent job presenting to the world Hing’s life story based on family documents, Chinese newspapers, and a myriad of other impressive primary sources combined with Hui’s knowledge of the culture and times. The book shatters many of the long-held baseless stereotypes of the Chinese in the American West and should be read by all. — Sue Fawn Chung, Ph.D., Professor EmeritaRoland Hui has skillfully combined meticulous research with a compelling chronicle of the rise and fall of Lew Hing, the first Chinese American Industrialist. Drawing from both Chinese and American documents, Hui, as an accomplished historian, recounts Lew Hing’s hard-earned business success and then his fall from grace during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The title “Chinaman Tycoon” reminds us that racial animosity towards Asians that permeated American society in the mid-nineteenth century has continued to linger since the beginning of the COVID pandemic in March of 2020. — Bruce Quan, Jr., great-grandson of Lew Hing and author of Bitter Roots: Five Generation of a Chinese Family in America.

Martin Jay Levitt was a union buster who planned and executed customized anti-union campaigns at more then 250 businesses across America, from coal mines and factories to airlines and nursing homes. Levitt reached the pinnacle of his profession by demolishing friendships, shattering families, and turning worker against worker; he routinely spied on the police records, personnel files, credit histories, medical records, and family lives of union activists in efforts to discredit them. After a twenty year career that destroyed the lives of potentially ten of thousands of people, Levitt decided to clear his conscience and expose the dirty tricks of the trade. The result was Confessions of a Union Buster, in which he lays out in agonizing detail the disgusting tactics he he employed anytime workers sought to improve their lives by organizing a union. He also spoke to auditoriums full of union workers, often beginning his speeches with the words, "I come from a very dirty business..."Now, 28 years after the publication of Confessions, this "New Activist Edition" couldn't be more relevant as the gap between the worker and executive classes has only gotten wider, reaching epidemic proportions.A new Foreword by legendary organizer Bob Muehlenkamp, a man who fought his share of campaigns against Marty Levitt and later encouraged Levitt to write this book, outlines in shocking detail why Confessions of a Union Buster: New Activist Edition couldn't come at a better time. Also new to this edition is Muehlenkamp's "17 Elements of the Union Busting System", a perfect tool for organizers that draws from Muehlenkamp's more than forty years campaigning for workers and fighting union busters.

How do you live a purposeful life in a world divided by racial, social, and economic inequality? What can today’s social justice activists learn from the powerful mass movements of the 1960s and ’70s? Conviction is the story of one woman’s journey from a working-class town in central California through some of the most significant struggles for radical change in the last third of the twentieth century. Confronted with intense criticisms of U.S. imperialism while traveling in Europe as a student, C. K. Gallagher enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley and participated in the battle for ethnic studies programs, became an ally of the Black Panther Party, and spent three years as a political prisoner at the California Institution for Women. She takes the reader with her inside Cuba and China, where she experiences different models of socialism; the auto industry, as a member of the United Auto Workers union; and the public schools, where she spent twenty years as a dedicated teacher.Conviction reflects a life lived in significant times and inspires hope for a new generation of activists.

In 1966, a six-year-old boy moved with his family from the Eastside of Paterson, New Jersey to a new neighborhood, and nothing was ever the same again.Hillcrest is a collection of thirty short stories, starting in 1966 and ending in 1978, that show us what young/teenage boys do when they’re on their own and free to explore anything and everything in a very insulated part of Paterson. These formative years would shape the boys into the men they would become as they made profound decisions that would affect their lives forever. This is not just a coming-of-age story; It is also a deep, sociological study of how our friends and our neighborhood affect us. It looks at the decisions we make as young people and the profound effects that they will have on our adult lives. And, it also shows the conflict and challenges that come with living in a neighborhood that is so different from the rest of the town.Hillcrest reveals many interesting people and their life-altering experiences…And every single story is true.

I went to high school and university in California. I worked as a gardener on weekends, and that is how I found an unexpected link to the technology industry. Taking this path led me to overcome limits that seemed impossible; transforming my reality, that of my family and that of my community. This is my story.

At a time when print journalism is rapidly fading away, there is a need for a book about the day-to-day life of a newspaper and magazine writer. This memoir is such a book. In addition to providing exciting stories about investigative reporting and investigative editorial writing (a concept he developed at The Commercial Appeal of Memphis), the book pulls back the newsroom curtain on the many intrigues that often accompany reporting, along with the scandals that happen behind the scenes at a daily newspaper.Currently celebrating 50 years of journalism, James L. Dickerson is one of the most successful journalists in the South. He has been a staff writer for three Pulitzer Prize-winning newspapers while writing for magazines and authoring more than 30 books on investigative history and investigative biography (one of his investigative biographies Colonel Tom Parker: The Curious Life of Elvis Presley's Eccentric Manager was purchased by Warner Bros. for director Baz Luhrmann for his upcoming Elvis movie starring Tom Hanks). In a fascinating transition from college rock musician to civil rights activist to Vietnam War resister, Dickerson enters the world of investigative journalism. His style of reporting is unique in that he assumes different personas for different interviews, becoming Bogart's Sam Spade (hence the book cover), Johnny Cash and Clark Kent-and he is one of the very few reporters to carry a gun on difficult assignments. For that reason, reading this memoir is like reading a Dashiell Hammett mystery novel.Go on assignment with Dickerson when he investigates the Shah of Iran's sudden appearance in Jackson, Mississippi during the Iran hostage crisis; when he organizes a nude pictorial for Playboy on the "Girls of Country Music"; when he chases after Bill Clinton for a Q&A interview for Playboy; when Omni magazine asks him to investigate historical murder cases; when he interviews the first Marine Corps pilot in history; when he interviews the stars of country, blues and rock music; and when he romances one of the first women to be elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives; and much more as he writes more than 30 investigative books on civil rights, hate crimes, and internment camps, to name just a few.

Included with this previously unpublished autobiography are book chapters, journal articles and other original source material that will enhance the reader's understanding of both the theory and the scientist.
