Not illustrated. 1911 Excerpt: ...a last bite of the cake of earthly satisfactions should be his. The baron loved his horse, and declared that he chose to ride him through the town. No one divined a ruse in this choice. The baron was free for the time being, and putting spurs to his horse he jumped over the parapet into the moat, and swam the animal across it, and so escaped. But at the end of three years he was again taken prisoner; this time the usual gratification allowed to prisoners was refused him; he was put forthwith on the wheel, and his limbs broken one by one with an iron bar. And looking at the wheel, I said to Edward: 'You wouldn't have been broken, but I should, had I lived in those times; and Luther would not have escaped had it not been for the Elector of Saxony.' I We discovered the great monk's portrait in the museum, and a splendid piece of portraiture it is, Cranach fixing upon our minds for ever a bluff face with a fearless eye in it. We looked into the panel tenderly, thinking of the stormy story of his life--quite a little panel, eight or ten by six or seven inches, containing but the head and shoulders, and so like Luther! Those fifteenth-century painters convince us, giving in a picture a likeness more real than any photograph, and doing this because they were able to look at nature innocently. We wondered at his Adam and Eve, two little panels, hanging close by, single.figures, covering with their hands 'certain ridiculous but necessary organs,' in modern pictures generally hidden by 'somebody else's elbow, or a flying gull, or a flying towel, or what not.' Modern painting is uninteresting because there is no innocency left in it. Blessed are the innocent, for theirs is the kingdom of Art! Edward admired these nudes as much as I did, and when he said it was not a p...

"Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood," writes Frank McCourt in Angela's Ashes. "Worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood." Welcome, then, to the pinnacle of the miserable Irish Catholic childhood. Born in Brooklyn in 1930 to recent Irish immigrants Malachy and Angela McCourt, Frank grew up in Limerick after his parents returned to Ireland because of poor prospects in America. It turns out that prospects weren't so great back in the old country either--not with Malachy for a father. A chronically unemployed and nearly unemployable alcoholic, he appears to be the model on which many of our more insulting cliches about drunken Irish manhood are based. Mix in abject poverty and frequent death and illness and you have all the makings of a truly difficult early life. Fortunately, in McCourt's able hands it also has all the makings for a compelling memoir.

Imagine that you come from one of the world’s smallest micro-territories. And that you have a lifelong dislike of crowds. Now imagine that you wake up one day and find yourself in a mega-city with eighteen million residents and a population density thirty-three times higher than central London.Imagine the crowds, the sounds, the smells, the endless traffic, the mixture of exhilaration and panic coursing through your veins….“M. G. Sanchez chronicles the highs and lows of his three-year residency in India with unflinching honesty, opening a novelistic window on India’s ‘maximum city.’ ” Dr Esterino Adami, Department of Oriental Studies, University of Turin."M. G. Sanchez’s BOMBAY JOURNAL provides a fascinating and highly readable account of his experience of three years spent living in the city of Mumbai. This is a remarkable travel narrative in particular because it is told from the perspective of a Gibraltarian writer who is alert to the sights, sounds, odours, flavours, and above all to the people whose lives are defined by the unpredictable complexity of their constantly evolving city."Dr John Stotesbury, Department of English, University of Eastern Finland.

Bahati Allan Eric narrates his life story in Uganda, Africa, to author Jeanie Cline. While experiencing a lifetime of struggles and hardships, he remains strong and resilient in meeting his goals. What are his dreams and goals? To be able to continue teaching and educating the Ugandan orphans the crucial skills they require to survive. While facing starvation and their various health issues and diseases, Bahati sensitizes adults and orphans with a greater view of coping when properly equipped with knowledge and experience. The orphans have absolutely no one for their dependence but this one young twenty-five-year-old veteran of scars and wounds received through his battle for survival. So truly unselfish, Bahati has starved himself and greatly sacrificed his health in order for these young children to survive. They learn how to use gardening and farm tools to develop the land he has provided, to plant and cultivate crops. He has taught them to "sew. reap, and harvest" their foods. Bahati has a degree in Agriculture and Education certificates he has proudly earned; not through an easy task, but a challenging one there in Uganda. His goal is to have interested donors help him purchase a water pump and refrigerator. The Ugandans who have no fresh water must go to the ponds where the animals drink and haul jerry cans back to their huts to boil water to drink. Parasites thrive in the dirty water and the natives and children become ill from drinking there. We hope Bahati's story will reach people throughout the universe and will touch their hearts to the point of wanting to help; help Bathati to assist these orphans, and make his dream come true. We cannot let his story go untold without prayers for God to send the right people to him to help in any way possible. God led me to this young man who is 7000 miles across the world from me. God wanted me to write his life story and share with the hope that someone cares enough to help. I truly care. We are blessed to be called... Author, Jeanie Cline

We grew up in a large family of six boys. Unfortunately, as adults, we were just 5 sons left, because Ange (mostly known as Archange) had left this world at the age of 52, leaving us in immense pain. Papa was a kind and loving human being. That’s what we always called him until his last day. Orica, my mother, was always supportive of him. Although they had a modest life together, they managed to raise all six of us with the sweat of their forehead and the pain of their body...Both mom and dad were very much concerned about their environment and their community. They never limited education to their kids and immediate families only. They rather envisioned education as a bridge to success for everyone they encountered on their path...

"Love's Cadenza" is an absorbing, highly personal recording of the author's journey from childhood to adulthood, from the disruption of war to settlement in a new homeland (Australia), from heartbreak to happiness in love. The intimacy of 17 years of life of one migrant, out of the many thousands who came to Australia in the 1950s, is depicted with rich detail, taken from the author's jounals written at the time, to recreate vividly a significant period of Australia's contemporary social life.
